Introducing Robert Brandenburg...

Our friends at Slashfilm help us introduce an artist we are VERY excited to be working with, Robert Brandenburg. They debut his two Crazy 4 Cult pieces, and give you a sneak peek into his upcoming solo show at G1988 as well. The basics are...Robert finds already existing paintings or photographs at swap meets or garage sales and then puts his own pop culture twist on them. It's pretty incredible.

CLICK HERE for the Slashfilm article and below are a few examples of his work...

CULT APPROACHING!!

It's our 1000th post on the blog! YAYYYYY!

And no better thing to talk about during such a monumental post than CRAZY 4 CULT! The opening of the show's 5th installment is just around the corner on July 8th, and we're starting to see a lot of the pieces and we are blown away. Next week we'll start really previewing the work here on the blog, including introducing you to a new artist to the G1988 family that we're so ecstatic to debut at CFC.

But until then, here is some media to get you in the mood for the show...which does include the first look at a CFC piece on the blog!

First up...I was interviewed by Aint It Cool News, which was pretty awesome. You can click the photo for the interview...

Then filmmaker Mat de Koning has been making a documentary for over 6 years! And during those 6 years one stop he made was at Crazy 4 Cult 2009 to follow artist Jodee Knowles. He documented the night and decided to put together an awesome video showing his experience and the night's insanity. It's pretty awesome and gives some first timers what to expect from CFC. THANKS MAT!

And lastly, but not leasty, we have Danielle Buerli who made an amazing little short that chronicles the process of creating her piece for Crazy 4 Cult 5. It's a sculpture and it's brilliant. Just not sure why Danielle is wearing that human suit.

Alice to Hov!

Our E3 tribute to American McGee's Alice art show has made it onto Jay-Z's Life & Times blog. The CRAZIEST part about this blog, which I just found out, is that Jay-Z has to approve EVERY post that goes on the blog. INSANE.

And here's the exclusive video, shot by Levi Maestro, which is great.

EVEN MORE NUTSO...

It was posted on Jay-Z's FACEBOOK page, which he rarely does for any post from his blog.

Even rappers love Alice.

IT'S A REVEAL!

Last night, we challenged our Facebook page followers to get us to 3,000 "likes" by Monday and it ended up taking less than an hour. The results of this challenge was that we revealed the 5th Crazy 4 Cult poster in the now storied tradition! Past artists who've created poster images for the show are Christopher Lee, Andrew Wilson, Scott C and Mike Mitchell. And this year...

It's ALEX PARDEE! A G1988, and worldwide, favorite, created this awesome poster for Crazy 4 Cult 5 and we'll be selling them starting July 8th at the opening reception, for a new price, cheaper than any poster from the past few years. We will also have a highly limited giclee print of just the skull image, no text.

So honored to have had Alex create this for Crazy 4 Cult, especially the same year as the book release! Needless to say, it's going to be a fun year.

AND if you haven't "liked" our Facebook page yet, you're missing out because we'll be doing more sneak peeks, special offers and cool stuff over there soon.

You can get to our Facebook page by CLICKING HERE.

YOU SHOULD LIKE US!

Seriously, check out our FB page. We are going to have all kinds of updates and exclusive info. We've been kinda lax about it in the past, but now, we are going to pay attention to this thing like it's the Casey Anthony murder trial (p.s. I'm really into the Casey Anthony murder trial).

YOU CAN VISIT OUR FACEBOOK AND "LIKE" US by clicking HERE.

Also, we bought a super serious camera today to start making videos. We literally know nothing about using it or editing, so while we learn, we made this video that shows you how incredible Ben Strawn's pieces are. We can't really show this with pictures online, but the way his pieces light up when there's a source of light behind them, is beautiful and almost makes a totally different piece than when it's in the dark. So here's our first video. One day I hope to look back at this and totally laugh at how far we've come in making videos, but I wouldn't put money on it.

You can check out the Ben Strawn show, and see what;s still available by CLICKING HERE.

TONIGHT!

Tonight at the Melrose gallery we open "Little Cloud Show," debuting over 20 new pieces from artist Ben Strawn. It's so hard to really get across how incredible Ben's work is, unless you see it in person. If you put each piece up to the light, they almost become totally different pieces. I really hope a lot of you can come see it in person by July 1. Ben gave us two more videos, letting you in on his tedious, and unique, process.

Hope to see you guys tonight for an incredible exhibit from Ben Strawn, and select pieces from Scribe's recent "Baggage & Freedom" exhibit, from 7-10 PM at the Melrose gallery. Come say hi to Ben. And me.

We were so stoked to have Marguerite Moreau, a.k.a. "Katie," stop by the Wet Hot American Summer anniversary show today at G1988: Venice. The fact that we are having our dream show for our favorite movie and all the stars of it are stopping by, emailing us or buying pieces is mind blowing!

Strawn & Quarterly

We are so excited to be ushering in "Little Cloud Show" featuring over 20 new pieces from Arkansas native Ben Strawn. Strawn has been a favorite in past G1988 group shows like "Crazy 4 Cult," "The LOST Art Show" and "Vivsect Playset," and now we're happy to bring a more focused show to our walls. The show opens Thursday night, June 16th, and showcases Strawn's signature style, which involves his technique of creating lightboxes for every piece. Seeing his work on the Internet just isn't enough, and anyone who has seen his art in person would agree. Ben, and his family, made the long drive to Los Angeles, so they will be joining us for the reception!

Here's a preview of what's to come from Ben...

Stay tuned to the blog for more peeks into "Little Cloud Show." For those who plan on visiting the gallery, we will also be displaying selected works from the recent Scribe show "Baggage & Freedome," so double the pleasure, double the fun. All the works will be on display through July 1.

Lastly, here's some more coverage of the Wet Hot American Summer anniversary at G1988 (VENICE).

Lo Truglio, Wain, and Marino

Here are a few more pics from last night's Wet Hot American Summer show. (Click on the images below to check out the available artwork).

Definitely one of the best nights ever!

Also - Ariel just told me that a lovely older lady, about the age of 80, came in to the gallery this morning and pointed out that Dave MacDowell's "Dick Cream" painting was her fav from the show. Classic.

MOST FUN EVER!

Last night's Wet Hot American Summer 10th Anniversary Tribute Show was a DREAM COME TRUE. When we opened the gallery 7 years ago, Katie and I joked, that if we were still open in 2011 we'd have to have a show dedicated to our favorite movie, and we did! And to have David Wain, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Peter Salett and producers of the movie, in the house, and to have actors who have BECOME MAJOR STARS SINCE THAT MOVIE, purchase pieces from other states? I MEAN, that happened.

pic stolen from David Wain's Twitter (@DavidWain)

We'll have more pictures and videos soon from both our screening and the art show, but until then...

From Their End

Working with Tree House Brands, Spicy Horse and EA has been pretty incredible for this week's special E3 event for American McGee's Alice. When they asked us to curate the work from this show, they had thrown in that a few in-house artists would be contributing to the event. I had explained I'd have to see the work before it's added, and they promise me it would spectacular. I think they understated it.

Graphic designers and game designers from the companies have delivered incredible paintings, screenprints and giclees to the show, and I wanted to showcase a few here on the blog before Thursday's public reception that will run 7-10 PM.

This screenprint by Zeng Shuo, a concept artist for the game, is beautiful! Stunning. She is someone we'd love to work more with, that's for sure. She delivered another piece, this time a giclee print, that's equally as pretty.

And check out Ken Wong, another game designer from Spicy Horse, with his own giclee print, that is one of my favorites.

Again, this show ended up being so good, even the artists we knew nothing about are stellar.

Thursday night, 7-10 PM. See you then!
